I admit…
I don’t care about identity politics at all. I wouldn’t either omit or accept a submission for that reason. I don’t care who you are. So if I read on a submission cover letter the phrase “I am”, I’m immediately turned off.
I don’t care if you’re struggling over anything. Join the club.
I don’t want to know the name of your dog. Even though I love dogs.
You have hobbies? God bless you.
Where you live/have lived may be important. Because region and travel experience can reflect or impact different writing styles.
You have a publication history? I’d like to know that. You a first timer? I love debuts so that’s cool. But it’s like being shot out of a cannon for the first time.
But in the arena of literature…anything goes…if you can write. So if you can write, any of the above might be worked into your story. Because anything goes if you can write. Even redundancy.
I want to know if you can write. That’s all. And I can tell.
