There’s such a misconception in Homer vs Nolan.
Nolan’s movie isn’t the Odyssey. It’s a riff on the Odyssey. A book and a film of a book are not equivalents of each other.
The value of the film partly lies in getting some people to read the Odyssey. It’s one of those prime aesthetic experiences that will change your life, alter your mind set. Make you look at the world differently.
But few people who buy the Odyssey on account of the film will actually read it. Few who start it will actually finish it.
But as a former bookseller: It’s great for the publishing world. Great for book sales.
The Odyssey is an elite, cultural artifact. It’s essentially aristocratic. It’s for individuals who are literate or who want to be. You’re invited to read the Odyssey. It’s not that hard to get hold of one. But no one, including Nolan, can climb that mountain for you.
The movie is for everybody. Nothing wrong with that.
